2009 Year End Post, and a Look Ahead to 2010

The year of 2009 has been a lively one at this blog:
- Slow Reading was published by Litwin Books. I was honoured to speak on the subject at the Library of Congress.
- OpenBook version 2 was released. A significant enhancement was the ability to link book data on web pages to specific library catalogue records using OpenURL. Published an article on it in NISO’s Information Standards Quarterly.
- Built FuzzyCat, a web crawler for library OPACs. The alpha prototype showed that it could query ten distinct OPAC models used by hundreds of libraries.
- Wrote the first cut of the I, Reader book concept online. This blog has taken that name as its new title.
- Completed my MLIS degree.
Here are my plans for 2010:
- Santa is bringing a Kindle for Christmas. I’m going to write a series on my experience with it.
- Release OpenBook 3 with major performance upgrades. This will include better use of Open Library APIs, plus an option to store book cover images and data locally in your WordPress database.
- A second draft of I, Reader. I will read slowly and review five or so books on my I, Reader reading list, and scan several of the others. The next draft will be written offline, then posted here at the blog using the new CommentPress theme for WordPress.
- A culture jamming campaign on ‘consumer scripts’, those irritating questions cashiers are compelled to say to upsell customers. Let’s give these people and ourselves a break. I have a novel idea about how to give managers the message.
- Creative and productive use of Twitter.
- Last but certainly not least, I will be kicking off a serious job search for a position in the library field. I have several good reasons to like my current position, but I am interested in finding the right library job in one of a few geographical areas. It will be the subject of my first post in 2010.
This is my final post for 2009. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Impressive, John!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you, too.
I’m looking forward to seeing you in the new year.
John, do let me know if San Francisco is one of those geographical areas!
Cheers Mark and Barbara.
