Aside: “Creative Reading” as a Title
Update 2009/09/10. I have switched the title back to “I, Reader”. It has more edge.
>>>
After writing this morning’s post on creative reading, it occurs to me that “Creative Reading” might be a better title than “I, Reader” for the project/series/book.
“I, Reader” has many connotations I like: reading, identity, the allusion to “I, Robot” and its many access points for subjects I wish to discuss. On the downside, it has resonances of narcissism, and the “I, Robot” connections are a little nerdy. I could deprecate “I, Reader” to the name of the first theme, currently “Robots and Readers”.
“Creative Reading” cuts a little deeper. It seems like a natural complement to the subject of creative writing. The subject of creative writing is sometimes thought of as an amateur’s pursuit, and I like that association. The theme that follows the current one will be dealing directly with writing as an extension of reading. Putting the word “creative” in the title fits with my upcoming technology themes too, where I will talk about hacking and rule breaking with technology, as an extension to reading. The only risk I see with “Creative Reading” is that it might be a little blander a title than “I, Reader”. On the other hand, it might have a more general appeal.
I will try on the title here at the blog for a while. Thoughts?

Creative Reading makes more sense, but I really, really like “I, Reader.”
Thanks Barbara, I’ll try out “Creative Reading” for a while, but I’m not ruling out switching back. At the very least I will keep “I, Reader” as the opening chapter title.
whatever works best for you, John. I like both but “Creative Reading” may be more descriptive.
Thanks for the feedback, Mark. I will keep “I, Reader” as a working title for now. “Creative Reading” will stay on a list for the final title when it comes time to pick it. Who knows, more titles may come to mind along the way. Suggestions are always welcome.
