Problem Adding New Titles
Update June: I inquired again, and learned that titles do not get added immediately to the search index, which is required to find them with OpenBook. A manual process has to be completed and this does not happen often. Open Library said it is a priority to fix this.
Update June 8: I inquired about the missing Crawford title, and learned that a massive manual import of new titles is in progress at Open Library. New books added from the website are a little behind for search. So it should show up soon. I will confirm in the near future.
I have been testing the OpenBook plugin. I have converted most of my book reviews to OpenBook, and it is working very well. There have only been two exceptions. One, I could not find Walt Crawford’s Balanced Libraries in Open Library, so I added it. I can see it right here in Open Library. But when I search for it in Open Library, or try to use the OpenBook plugin (which searches for it), it cannot be found. Weird. I will give it a day to see if it is a data processing issue, then I will follow up. Maybe I need to add a minimum number of values.
The other one is Cliff Burns’ So Dark the Night. Cliff published the book on his website. Great book; you can download the entire work for free. But it does not have an ISBN. In a future version of OpenBook, I will add the ability to search by other numbers, and perhaps titles. For now, I stuck with my old manual method for adding book data.
I notice now that a number of authors in Open Library have periods behind their names. Makes for an odd display of their names. Might have to inquire about that.
I am feeling quite confident about the plugin so I uploaded it to the WordPress server and it should be available anyday now. I’ll make an announcement once it is available, but you can watch the WordPress server page for it if you like.
I’ve been a little preoccupied with this unit, and plan to slow down down for a while. Ha, is that any surprise. Well, I’m not talking yet, but I feel a second wind brewing for Slow Reading … give me a little time yet …
