“Paper vs. paperless: Which makes reading greener?”
Are e-books like the Kindle (left) and Sony Reader (right) more eco-friendly than paper books? The short answer is that we don’t know — yet.

Both paper and paperless information will be part of the future, but I find the e-book side of the debate uninformed and poorly thought out. This article asks a very important question that challenges the unexamined idea that e-books are greener. We need to examine the full life-cycle of a technology to evaluate that. As the article states, the numbers aren’t in yet. Mark Lindner was the reluctant host of a discussion on this subject a little ways back. One useful thing that came out of that discussion was this link from Paul R. Pival (The Distant Librarian) on the environmental pros and cons of reading newspapers online.
